Its been a while since i read this one but the message is still loud and clear in my mind- Fight till you can, and more when you can't and believe in your dreams- believe that your voice matters, you matter!
** SPOILERS***
This book is about a little girl, Adunni, who gets married at a tender age, soon after her mother's death, leaving behind her little brother, whom she adores so much and who is like a little kid to her, raised by her. Her marriage to a guy , who already has 2 wives, is aimed at producing a boy- ironically when she herself is a little girl! She befriends one of the wives ( pregnant at the time) and soon accompanies her on a hushed journey to meet the real father of baby, through an illicit affair, majorly done in hope of producing a boy for her husband. Somehow, the lady dies and this girl has to flee, considering the news of the other wive's death travels fast.
She is led to the city by a local guy, who places her as a house maid at a fabric shop owner's big lavish house. There are strict rules, so much to do and not much food to eat for servants. We catch glimpses of how the people with the biggest houses have the smallest hearts. They are unrattled by tragedy and lack empathy towards others- specially the poor , and spend time and money in frivolous vanity, which never lasts long. Adunni is about molested by the house owner's husband twice but as they say, you find angels guarding you where you least expect them to. The house chef lets her know of a scholarship through which she can attend school, applying as a housemaid under a unique program ,aimed at empowering the unprivileged sections of our disoriented society.
What follows is -grit, determination and sheer tenacity. Adunni gets help from a lady , who visited one of the parties in the house, who seems like a nice person but carries some baggage from past. Adunni, with her ease of words and inquisitive demeanor, wakes up something in Tia. Tia helps Adunni with submission and her essay, teaching her English and forming a formidable, loving bond with her, amazed at how much potential each life carries. In the process, Adunni's simple but heartfelt questions enable Tia to explore her emotions, her dreams and long lost thoughts and in process, she learns she wants to be a mother.
Adunni's dream takes flight when she is selected for the scholarship and she knows she would now have a loud voice, and that the same voice which led her here will help many others speak !
